Franklin County

is a county located in the U.S._State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 8,448. Its county_seat is Meadville6.

Geography

According to the U.S._Census_Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,468 km² (567 mi²). 1,462 km² (565 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.

Demographics

As of the White, 36.27% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,211 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.20% are married couples living together, 14.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.13. In the county the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $24,885, and the median income for a family is $31,114. Males have a median income of $26,676 versus $19,567 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,643. 24.10% of the population and 20.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.10% are under the age of 18 and 24.10% are 65 or older.
